British Barbados Nursing Revolution

Celebrating the untold stories of the Windrush generation.

The exhibition brought alive the untold stories of individuals who came from Barbados as part of the Windrush generation.

Designed to coincide with Black History Month, the British-Barbadian Nursing Revolution, focuses on the nation-building capacity of a group of women (and some men), whose story began in Africa and the West Indies, and has had a global impact via their British settlement.

The story begins centuries before, in 1627 when Barbados became one of Britain’s earliest colonies. This ‘factory-sugar-island’ under intensive production, through slave labour, contributed to Britain’s growing wealth.

The trident of the Barbados flag inspires the dynamic identity and graphic language, suggesting the movement of people, as well as directing people through the exhibition in chronological order.
